Born in Pennsylvania to a wealthy family with banking and railroad interests, Mary visited Europe as a child and had her initial training at the Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia.  She exhibited at the Salons of 1872 and 1874, and then met Degas, who was to become her lifelong friend.
